Glossary of the 5 Key Concepts

5 Key Concepts Glossary
Click on hyperlinks (underlined in blue) for presentation analysis of each concept

Textual analysis of how the 4 technical codes communicate meaning, the four technical codes consisting of camerawork, mise en scene, editing and sound. For example, how a female characters costume (mise en scene) may communicate the meaning of her being of working class.


Representation
How a stereotype is represented within a media product, e.g. class, gender, age, sexuality, disability and ethnicity. For example, a male character with a hearing problem (disability) may be represented in a positive stereotype.


Audience  
Who the target audience is for a media product, considering viewing platform, place of exhibition as well as the content of the film. Using websites such as the 'Pearl and Dean' website can identify the target audience in an extremely in-depth way.


Narrative 
Applying the theorists and terms, e.g. Narrative Structure, Restricted and Unrestricted Narration, etc. For example, the short film 'Lovefield' is made up of a linear narrative and makes use of restricted narration in the beginning.


Genre 
The category and grouping of a media product, e.g. thriller, comedy, teen. Media products can also be 'hybrids' which consists of one or more genres, perhaps going on to form a 'sub-genre'. For example, the film 'Se7en' is of the thriller genre.
